Charlottefield + Bullet Union

After seeing Charlottefield on the last day of Brighton Live, I think I would like to see them again.

... which makes it all the more joyful that they are playing tomorrow (Thursday 20th Oct) at the Freebutt, with Bullet Union.

Gigs like horseflies.

So I finally "got" Charlottefield last night - there was one moment where I drifted into some kind of wonderful hypnotic state... TRANSPORTED by the MUSIC, man. Which doesn't happen very often.

Cracking night, really. The first band, who have a long name and are from Leeds, do some enjoyably non-generic shouty hardcore-punk, incorporating a couple of proper eat-your-brain riffs that really merit more than the spattering of light applause and pint-holding neck-slapping (seriously, what is that?) that Brighton's most parent-bothering haircuts see fit to muster.

Then comes Yushi, who take a bit of getting used to; I warm to their sloppy charm after a few songs, as they manage to make some extremely strange noises in head-bending rhythms without sounding like self-indulgent wank. Not an easy trick.

And then... Charlottefield. Lost in the music, tight and professional and utterly pretension-free, they exude effortless cool* without being all DIY-holier-than-thou about it. Sharp, math rhythms and ragged keening scraping guitar golly gosh, wow.

A friend-of-a-friend who I called Gary for the whole night (apparently he's really "Sean") says that usually, at least one of them is pissed off at something for some reason, which messes with the dynamic. But tonight, they are a single heaving, pulsating, noise-thing. Brrrr.

Poor Bullet Union do well to follow - on another night, I might have been raving about them. But tonight, the crowd belongs to Charlottefield. I thenk you.

Fanboy moment of the night: I'm standing next to Pete from Illuminati 3 as he buys a Charlottefield record from one of the guys from Yushi. Who says: "So you brought your fan along then, Pete?". Indeed, I am wearing an item of Illuminati-branded clothing. Remember, kids, don't wear your friends' bands' t-shirts when you hang around with them in public. It's not cool.
